Expand is built to be private by design. There are no accounts and no sign-in — we don't know who you are, and your personal content never leaves your device. This page explains exactly what data the app touches and why.
What stays on your device
Everything you create or choose in Expand is stored locally on your iPhone (and shared with your own widgets and Apple Watch through Apple's App Group and WatchConnectivity mechanisms — never through our servers):
- Your favorites, collections, and history
- Affirmations you write yourself
- Followed topics, wallpaper and theme choices, text settings
- Reminder schedules and streak data
We cannot read, access, or recover any of this. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it.
What we collect, and why
Anonymous usage analytics — PostHog
We record anonymous events (for example "affirmation favorited" or "paywall viewed") tied to a random identifier that is not linked to your name, email, or any account — we never have those. This tells us which features matter so we can improve the app. Data is processed by PostHog on US servers.
Crash reports — Sentry
If the app crashes, a technical report (device model, iOS version, what the code was doing) is sent to Sentry so we can fix the bug. Crash reports contain no affirmations, favorites, or personal content.
Purchases — RevenueCat & Apple
Subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple. To know whether premium is unlocked, we use RevenueCat, which receives your purchase receipt and an anonymous identifier — never your Apple ID, name, or payment details.
What we don't do
- No accounts, no email collection, no contact upload
- No advertising and no ad networks
- No tracking across other apps or websites (we do not use the identifier for advertisers, and the app never shows Apple's tracking permission prompt because it doesn't track)
- No selling or sharing of data with data brokers — ever
Notifications, photos, and permissions
Reminders use local notifications scheduled on your device; nothing about them is sent to us. If you save an affirmation card to your photo library, the app asks for add-only photo access and writes just that image. Both permissions are optional.
Where data is processed, and for how long
The anonymous analytics, crash, and purchase data described above is processed in the United States by the providers named. By using Expand you consent to that transfer, wherever you are located. We keep this data only as long as it serves its purpose: crash reports are automatically deleted by Sentry after 90 days, purchase state is kept by RevenueCat for as long as needed to honor your subscription, and anonymous analytics are kept while we actively use them to improve the app. None of it identifies you personally, and you can request deletion at any time via the email below.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a copy of data concerning you, and to withdraw consent at any time. Because our data is anonymous and your content is on-device, the practical answers are usually immediate — deleting the app deletes your content, and reinstalling resets your analytics identifier — but for any request, email hello@getexpand.app and we will act on it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
Children
Expand is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices
Because everything personal lives on your device, deleting the app removes your data. Analytics identifiers are random and reset if you reinstall. For any privacy question or request, email us and we'll help: hello@getexpand.app.
